Joan Mejia is a student at La Follette High School in Madison. He speaks about his experience spending most of his youth living in Mexico and how he connects with his classmates through Escalera. He speaks to the linguistic diversity of Madison and why he sees speaking more than one language as an advantage.

So, hi everybody! Today I'm going to chat with Joan Mejia, student at La Follette High School here in Madison and thanks so much for chatting with me.
Para empezar, ¿puedes contarnos un poco sobre tu experiencia en la escuela con las lenguas y cómo has aprendido inglés y español?
So first can you just tell us a little bit about your experience in school with languages and how you've learned English and Spanish?

Okay, yo nací aquí en los Estados Unidos. Y como a los 4 años, viajé hacia México y quedé 10 años allá y pues, allá aprendí todo el español. Mi inglés nada más, pero después de 10 años estuve allá, regresé acá para aprenderlo bien. Y pues mis amigos y maestros me fueron ayudando con clases. Y así fue aprender.

So he was born here in the United States. But then at four years old he went to Mexico where he lived for 10 years. He developed a lot of his Spanish skills, not so much English. But then after those then years he came back to the US and with the help of his friends and teachers, he was able to get by in his classes and learned a lot.
¿Y cómo te sientes como individuo bilingüe en tu escuela? ¿Se ve como una ventaja, o hay mucha presión de siempre hablar inglés o qué es el ambiente?
So, how do you feel as a bilingual individual in school? Is it seen as an advantage? Or is there a lot of pressure to always speak English or what's kind of like the vibe there?

Pues, es una ventaja porque puedo aprenderlo mejor, así practicando lo más con diferente gente, pues yo me siento bien.

So he sees it as an advantage because you can learn better, you can interact with different people, and yeah, he sees it as a really good thing.
Y yo sé que participas en Escalera. ¿Puedes explicarnos lo que haces en este club y otras maneras en las que tienes un sentido de comunidad en La Follette?
So he participates in Escalera. So just wondering if you could talk a little bit about what you do in the club and how you kind of build that sense of community at La Follette.

Pues nosotros en el club estamos aprendiendo un poco de cómo la gente se expresa más o menos, así y pues a mi me está ayudando ya que puedo saber cómo se está expresando cada gente a la vez. Y pues esto estamos practicando.

So they're learning kind about how to interact with others and how people express themselves, different identities.
Y en cuanto a Madison por lo general, ¿qué piensas sobre las actitudes hacia el multilingüismo o gente que habla idiomas que no son inglés? ¿Puedes hablar español en la comunidad cuando quieras, o siempre estás tratando de decidir si alguien va a responder en una manera negativa, o...?
So kind of like looking at Madison in general, what do you think about the attitudes towards multilingualism or people that speak languages beyond English? So can you speak in the community whenever you want in languages that aren't English or do you have to always kind of feel out if somebody is going to respond in a negative way or..

Pues, yo creo que aquí en Madison, que hay distintos lenguajes y mucha gente habla diferentes. Yo creo que está bien, pero aún gente sí como hablar dos idiomas y en inglés diferente pronunciación, hay complicaciones en entenderse. Pero, yo creo que con el tiempo, se puede acostumbrarnos más.

So kind of in Madison, there's different ways that people speak languages and they're different groups of languages. And in general, it's pretty good. But sometimes there can be issues, there can be conflicts if people can't necessarily understand each other super well, but in general, and hopefully through time, it'll get better.
Y finalmente, ¿por qué crees que deberíamos celebrar hablar más de un idioma? Frecuentemente, decimos ser bilingüe es un superpoder, pero ¿por qué es?
So finally if you could just tell us a little bit why you think that speaking more than one language is a superpower?

Yo creo que al hablar más de un idioma, yo creo que es una ventaja, ya que si quieres ir a un país en el que habla distinto idioma, lo quieres aprender. Es una ventaja ya que puedes viajar cuando quieras y puedes interactuar con gente. Y ya no más va a tener problemas en no entender.

So he sees it as a superpower, as an advantage as it relates to traveling. So if you want to go to a country where they speak a different language, you don’t have to worry about lack of communication between people and lack of understanding, you can talk with the local people, so it’s very helpful.
